Passing the Faith Along

We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. Psalms 78:4

I am grateful for those who have directly and indirectly passed the faith along to me. First, my wonderful parents who not only mentored me in the faith but modeled for me what it means to be a Christ follower and Christian leader. There have been those key people God has brought my way to help me understand the Word and ways of God. Recently I was able to have some quality time with a remarkable veteran of the faith. I’ve known Robert for some 20 years and had the privilege of preaching in his church in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Robert is now in his mid-80s, but still vibrant and insightful. I tell him that he is a walking encyclopedia of Bible truth and Pentecostal experience. As does any great true man of God, he humbly says, "Thanks, I am still in the process." He is full of stories and insights that amaze and inspire me. Thank God for such people.

One of the most important things we can do for the present and future generation in our ministry is be in the business of passing the faith along. This was the instruction of Moses to parents in Deuteronomy 6. This is what Eli did for Samuel, Naomi did for Ruth, Elijah did for Elisha, Mordecai did for Esther and Paul did for Timothy. Intentionally, sharing who God is, what God could do and how God wanted to bless. As you head into the fall, I encourage you to deliberately make sure you are passing the faith along. Talk of God’s wonderful works, explain God’s Word in ways that can be understood and practiced. Then demonstrate your love for God in authentic worship. This generation and the next generation long for this mentoring and modeling.
