A Battle Buddy

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up.

A couple of years ago I was inspired by my friend Pastor Stu Webber who encouraged every leader to have a "Battle Buddy". Stu drew from his military service in Viet Nam and shared the value and importance of having people in your life who will stand with you in the good and difficult times. No one should attempt to live the Christian life alone. A "Battle Buddy" is a close friend who makes a commitment to stand with you and to stay with you in the midst of a battle or conflict. Neither will abandon the other. They have pledged to be their for each other.

Every Christ-follower and minister needs at least one person in their lives who can be their "Battle Buddy". A person with whom they are open and honest. Of course if you are married, you should start there. But I have also discovered the value of having genuine friendships with a select few men in my life. These friendships have provided great benefits: 1. Encouragement 2. Honesty 3. Assistance 4. Counsel 5. Friendship 6. Coaching 7. Prayer

Listen, you were not designed to go it alone in the Christian life. You were built to belong. You need people in our life who can tell it like it is, at the same time build you up and pray for you.

Who is that person for you? Why not begin to build that support system in your life, if you have not already.

    1. Pray for Battle Buddies.
    2. Select Gainers not Drainers.
    3. Invest in the friendship.
    4. Connect at least 2 times a month.
    5. Establish clear expectations.
    6. Commit to confidentiality.
    7. Stay honest and positive.

Galatians 6:2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
