Smart Phones

Smart Phones

SMART phones, do you have one?  Well the number of people that have one is increasing on a daily basis, and why?  Because they really are smart!  On my phone I receive my email, text messages, Facebook Twitter and phone calls.  When I have a question I Google it, when I want the definition of a word I can go to dictionary.com, when I am lost I have a GPS, when I’m bored I have games, and it is my camera, as well, and holds all my pictures.  It definitely is a smart phone!

Well, yesterday I was thinking about my phone and how often I look at it and began to feel a little convicted.  What if I looked at God’s Word as often as I do my phone, what if I depended on it for all the answers as much as I do my phone? After all His word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.

People talk about being addicted to these things and I suppose I could fall into that category.  My phone is always with me and I tend to do more work because it is so convenient.  Of course, I have good reasons for needing my phone; I want to stay connected, I want to know what’s going on in my friends’ lives, etc.  By the way, staying connected is a full-time job!

So I have considered a new name or at least an acronym for my SMART phone…..  Stealing My Ability to Rest Today phone.  Do you have one of these?  We seem to think it is the answer to our busy lives, however, with the benefits, there needs to be some caution.

Here are a few guidelines that I have given my girls who are obsessed with texting:

  • No phones during class time (limited to before, middle or after school/work)
  • No phones during dinner (that seems obvious, although its usually on their chairs)
  • No phones while talking to other people (people don’t feel valued)
  • No phones after 9:30pm (or another reasonable time)

What limits are you setting that help you keep your smart phone working smart for you, and not becoming a S.M.A.R.T phone?

I think it would be a fun topic for discussion.  I think God would have us be a good steward with this resource too!
