Uncommon

Last fall I read Tony Dungy’s latest book, Uncommon. The book is based on a life lesson Coach Dungy learned from his former football coach at the University of Minnesota, Cal Stoll. Coach Stoll often told his team, “Success is uncommon, therefore not to be enjoyed by the common man. I’m looking for uncommon people.” In Dungy’s book he gives us thirty-one uncommon life principles to finding the path to significance in life.

Significance and success are not the same. God calls us to be significant not just successful. On page 218 Dungy says, “God call us to follow the dreams in our hearts, to pursue them with all of our might. Sometimes they will result in “success” in worldly terms, but other times it will feel more like futility. But we must remember that God’s scorecard is different then ours.”

1 Samuel 16:7, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God requires us to be faithful, not successful. If you remember this, you will end up being both in His eyes. God is looking on the inside more then the outside.

Coach Dungy points out that there are two ways to be uncommon. One is to have a special talent or ability, not like others. The other way is to have an attitude and desire to do what others can’t or won’t. My talents and abilities are not that outstanding. For me to be uncommon I must rely on an uncommon attitude and desire to be found faithful.

What about you?
