Speaking to Middle Schoolers by Aaron McKee
Here are some quick tips for more effective sermons to a young teen audience, from Middle School Pastor, Aaron McKee.
Tip #1- Be Prepared: Know where you’re going with the message, or they will eat you alive. Been there, done that!
Tip #2- Keep their attention longer by including stories in your sermon. If you can, find video clips that illustrate your point.
Tip #3- Don’t under challenge them, but make the challenge palatable. Take your message seriously, but also take time to laugh, make sound effects, change your voice levels and the speed of your presentation so they don’t tune you out.
Tip #4- Don’t speak for too long. If you don’t have a lot to say that night, do everybody a favor and end early. Have a game or contest in your back pocket just in case. Sometimes less is more.
Tip #5- Talk about ONE Subject. If you want them to remember your message that is!
Random Thoughts:
I don’t use fill in the blank sermon notes, because they turn into love notes, or paper airplanes, or some type of origami. I do use powerpoint, and occasionally have a couple volunteers come up to the front. You can get creative! Just try to find ways to make your point stick.
