Post Myspace by Aaron Mckee
I know myspace is a joke now, so I won’t spend a lot of time on this. Though not too long ago myspace was scorching HOT! I remember the day I created my brand new myspace url: “myspace.com/middleschoolpastor.” It was a name I thought I would either pass along to future generations or sell at a high price. Hahahahaha I was wrong!
As youth pastors & leaders we swim in the fast current of youth culture and fall of Myspace.com simply serves as yet another reminder that culture is moving quickly and that it’s now on to the next biggest bandwagon.
The once mega metropolis of Myspace.com is now empty, except for a few survivors. While almost everyone has migrated over to Facebook there is a small strain of users who are very active and have the whole place to themselves.
I’ve kept my account open (mostly because I don’t want to give up my URL:) ), and have noticed some very different kinds of activity going on in the vacant streets in Myspace.
How would you act if you woke up one morning and the rest of the world had vanished? No more paying for movies at the theater, do whatever you want, there’s no one watching…
And that’s exactly what’s happening on myspace right now. Students stand in a virtual wasteland of electronic goodies, with all the potency and fire power it possessed when it was king of the mountain.
-I understand if a student doesn’t want you (a leader or parent) to know what’s going on, they’ll just get another account with a different name that no one important knows about.
-I understand that everyone has moved on to greener pastures except for small pockets of these “post-apolyptic users” and that it’s probably not worth it for you to open a new account and try to be “friends.” IF you actually found them, they probably wouldn’t let you into their circle, because they’ve got too good of a thing going.
This article is for those who (Gasp) haven’t deleted their Myspace page. My encouragement- DON’T. Keep it open and get the inside scoop. But, don’t feel like you need to update the wallpaper or spend lots of time on it, remember it’s post-apocalyptic.
See Myspace for what it is- a temporary window to watch how a dwindling group of people act with no accountability.
