The Divine Mentor

Daily Devotions, Quit Time, Alone Time, Prayer Time - call it whatever you want, but spending time with Jesus is one of the most important disciplines you will ever form in your life. Some might suggest that having a time of daily devotions is just program. If this is your view then you have misunderstood this discipline all together.

Last week I just finished reading an outstanding book by Wayne Cordeiro, The Divine Mentor. In chapter 12 he writes this about the discipline of daily devotions, “It is not the program but the process that changes our hearts as we sit with the Master.” As a Pastor, Wayne has developed a self-feeding program for his church, using a simple system of daily devotions. It is not a daily devotional, but rather a disciplined daily system of reading God’s Word, listening to what He is saying to you through the scriptures and applying His Word to your daily life.

Wayne says that when God’s Word bleeds out of you and totally consumes you – that’s when it makes you a disciple. On page 120, he writes this about God’s Word, “Just in your head: Information. Just in your heart: Inspiration. When it bleeds out of you: Incarnation. When God’s Word bleeds out of you, it makes you authentic.”

I would encourage every one of you to read The Divine Mentor. Get back in touch with God’s Word, listen for His voice and ask Him how you can apply what He is saying to your life. Don’t just read the Bible for the program or to prepare another sermon; fall in love with the Bible and the process of sitting at His feet.
